EATING AND LOVING: ASPARAGUS

So, they may be heading out of season, but we totally enjoyed the JUNK out of asparagus from our local farmers market. We LOVE roasted asparagus with scrambled eggs and parmesan cheese (top right photo which also featured leftover steak, for real, get IN to that.). We also made a grilled pizza (yes, grilled. it was the first time i had done it and man, it works) with asparagus, caramelized onion, sundried tomatoes and fontina cheese. And the May issue of bon appétit featured a fettuccine with peas, asparagus and pancetta on the cover which we made (with home-made fettuccine-i'll blog about my recent foray into pasta making soon) that was totally delicious.

If you don't like asparagus, I really recommend you try it fresh and not from the grocery store! It is SO much sweeter and more tender and well, just plain magical. I feel that way about any fruit or vegetable from the farmers market vs. the grocery store: there is just no comparison. And it is only a good thing to support your local agriculture!

What are you loving to eat right now? And do you visit your local farmers market?

  3. I really don't like asparagus, but that pizza and pasta dish both look yummy! Maybe I should try them on a pizza and see how it goes. I'm currently a bit obsessed with carrots. Roasted, dipped in hummus, shredded in a salad, all delicious! I go through food phases, and carrots are the snack of the month, who knows what it will be next month!

  4. Love asparagus! I try and hit the farmers market each weekend. It's easier to go from September to May as my brother helps out his best friend who owns an apple orchard and sells his delish apples there - so I always stop in to get them fresh...and even though I try and pay, I ususally get them for free. My kick current snow peas fresh from the garden in stir fry or just dipped in homemade ranch dressing - yummy!

  5. hip hip gin gin: you should totally try it on the pizza and even roasted! I love carrots too (and hummus, oh my gosh). My favorite way is to roast them with olive oil, shallots and a squeeze of lemon at the end! I go through phases too! You'll have to tell me what you get into next! :)

Luna and Chloe: that is SO cool about the apple orchard and quite the hook-up you have! :) I actually cannot find snow peas at the farmers market here, only grocery store, but i LOVE them in stir-frys too! i am totally addicted to stir frys in general!
